K-Wings earn a “special” victory Kalamazoo defeats Fort Wayne 2-1

FORT WAYNE- Even with the Kalamazoo Wings and Fort Wayne Komets combining to go 0-for-12 on the power-play, it was an Eric Kattelus special teams goal in the third period that would prove to be the difference in the K-Wings 2-1 victory Sunday night against the Komets at Allen County Memorial Coliseum. K-Wings Regular

In spite of being two of the league’s least penalized teams, the K-Wings and Komets combined for 18 minutes in infractions in the opening period. The K-Wings enjoyed a majority of the ensuing power-play chances earning four of the five in the period. Despite the man-advantages in the period, the K-Wings couldn’t capitalize and they ended the first period tied at 0-0 with the Komets.

The physical play bled into the second period, but so did some scoring. Fort Wayne broke the seal 6:41 into the stanza with a tally from Mathew Pistilli (12th). Camped out in front of the K-Wings net, Pistilli extended his point streak to five games by knocking in a Joey Leach rebound.

The Komets lead didn’t last long. Less than two minutes later, Jeremie Blain (3rd) created a turnover and skated the length of the ice for an unassisted marker. The goal was Blain’s first goal since November 21st, also against the Komets.

Kattelus (3rd) delivered the victory for the K-Wings scoring shorthanded with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Goaltender Scott Munroe was stellar between the pipes for the K-Wings making 23 saves to improve his record of 4-0-0-0. The victory increased the K-Wings season-long winning streak to six games.

The loss marked the first time this season that the Komets have dropped back-to-back (8-1-0-0) games.
