READING – Tied after 40 minutes, the Kalamazoo Wings responded with three goals in the final 20 minutes to skate past the Reading Royals 5-2 Saturday night at the Santander Arena.
Trying to set the tone early, the K-Wings jumped ahead 37 seconds into the game with a goal from Ludwig Blomstrand. Battling in front of the Royals net, Blomstrand registered his team-leading 24th goal of the season on a backhander.
Finding the puck in a scrum in front of the K-Wings crease, Olivier Labelle tied the game late in the period with his 22nd goal of the season.
Taking a page from the K-Wings, the Royals struck early in the second period with a tally from Sean Wiles (22nd) 1:26 into the period.
The Royals lead would be short lived, as just 34 seconds later, Lane Scheidl recorded the equalizer with a slap shot from the right circle.
The third period started the same way as the previous two with a quick goal. Standing in front of the Royals net, Michael Neal deflected in the eventual game-winner 1:56 into the third.
Holding on to the one goal lead, Kalamazoo finally added some insurance with less than five minutes remaining with Blomstrand’s (25th) second goal of the game. Receiving a Dane Fox pass off of his skate, Blomstrand quickly gathered it to his stick and scored on a backhander.
Gergo Nagy (13th) capped of the victory by adding an empty-netter in the final minute.
