Just Short in Barrie

It was a close game, but the Steelheads ultimately dropped the game 6-5 against the Barrie Colts.

First Period

The Steelheads were back on the road to take on the Barrie Colts for the first time since they defeated the Colts in the first round of last year’s playoffs.

The first period started with tons of back and forth action, with both teams laying some big hits for their clubs. It was Barrie who took an early lead though as the Steelheads found themselves shorthanded and Beau Jelsma capitalized on the man advantage 1:13 into the frame.

Looking to respond, The Steelheads eventually drew a penalty 8:42 into the period. Just as the penalty had expired, Owen Beck received a pass from Ethan Del Mastro, who fired the puck to beat Ben West low glove side to tie the game at one. Charlie Callaghan also picked up the assist.

Not satisfied with just one goal, Beck went hunting for more. Kai Schwindt managed to spot the centreman in the slot, where he was able to score his second of the game just four minutes after his first. Callaghan earned his second point of the night with the secondary assist,

Just 1:40 after the Steelheads second goal of the game, it was Zander Veccia who was able to come up with a quick release to put the Blue and White up 3-1. Schwindt and Beck got the assists on Trout’s third goal with Schwindt picking up his second point of the night and Beck with his third. The assist also marks Beck’s 10th point in his last three games.

The Trout didn’t stop there, as Brice Cooke received a drop pass from Luke Misa to secure his first goal as a Steelhead and his first goal of the season. Del Mastro was also able to pick up his second assist of the game to close out the frame with a three goal lead.

Second Period

After the Steelheads scored four unanswered goals, the Colts goalie West was replaced by Anson Thornton to start the period. However, the Steelheads came out firing into the second frame looking for more opportunities to extend their lead.

From the moment the puck dropped, the physicality picked up and both goaltenders looked solid. Around two minutes in, the Steelheads got their best chance of the period, where Cooke was able to find the loose puck giving himself a breakaway opportunity but it was eventually stopped by Thornton.

It wasn’t until there was 4:49 left in the period, where Barrie was able to cut the lead In half. Colts defender Connor Punnett received the puck high in the Trout zone where he was able to one-time the puck past screened Beglieri, beating him up high.

The Steelheads were able to keep up their tempo despite the Colts goal, holding onto the lead and entering the final frame with a 4-2 lead.

Third Period

Mississauga looked to maintain their lead and play strong hockey to end the game. The Steelheads were not letting the Colts create any momentum in the game with Barrie not recording a single shot close to the midway point of the period.

A few minutes later, Zakary Lavoie picked up a turnover from the Colts in the slot where he sent a backhand pass to Luca Del Bel Belluz. Del Bel Belluz was able to deposit the puck into the back of the net to extend the lead 5-2.

As the period continued, the Colts amped up the pressure, where Jelsma was able to score his second of the game with 7:33 left in the frame. With 6:22 remaining in the third, both teams took a penalty with Lavoie and former Steelhead Callum Chisholm called for roughing. On the ensuing four on four, Josh Kavanagh was able to get a hold of the puck off a bad bounce in front of the net to sneak it past Beglieri, making it a one-goal game.

With time winding down, Ethan Cardwell was able to snipe the puck up high to tie the game at five. 0:23 seconds later Beglieri let off a rebound that went right to Colts’ Tai York, which put Barrie on top to win it 6-5.
