WINNIPEG, Manitoba – On a beautiful sunny September morning, millions of people watched online and on television, as Winnipeg Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff took to the podium at 17 Wing Air Force Base at Winnipeg International Airport to unveil what would be the Jets home and away jerseys. The backdrop for this event was a CF-18 and a Mighty Hercules. The reason for the military themed event was the fact that the Jets’ new logo and colour scheme is a tribute to the troops and the strong Air Force history in Winnipeg.
After a great deal of hard work to keep things under wraps until this moment, Cheveldayoff finally unveiled the new jerseys in dramatic fashion, with loud music and smoke the back of the Hercules aircraft started to open and smoke bellowed out of the plane. With bright blue lights behind them Jets Captain Andrew Ladd, Eric Fher, Nik Antropov, and Mark Stuart walked out of the plane onto the tarmac wearing the new jerseys.
Ladd and Antropov in navy blue, with Fehr and Stuart in the away whites.
The home jersey colour looks like Navy blue but the proper name is Polar Night Blue, a colour found on most of today’s Royal Canadian Air Force
The away jerseys are of course white with a Polar Night Blue stripe down the whole length of the arms and the aviator blue striping.
Ladd answered question at the event saying, “They are sharp looking jerseys it’s a clean look and hopefully they will stand the test of time.”
Cheveldayoff said at the event, “We worked hard with Reebok to create a look that worked well with their (Reebok) modern Edge System uniforms and the result is clean simple and classic.”
The 17th Wing commander, Col. Blais Frawley, was very pleased with the fact that the Winnipeg Jets had picked the Royal Canadian Air Force for the inspiration and the back drop of such an event, “It shows that they are truly committed to the rich history that both hockey and the Air Force have in Winnipeg.”
