In Montreal Tuesday, the Canadiens rallied with a three-goal third period to get their match with the Winnipeg Jets to overtime.
But in the end they could not get the win as Kyle Connor scored at the three-minute
mark of the extra session for a 5-4 Jets win.
Winnipeg is just three points out of the Central Division top spot.
the Nashville Predators lost to the Florida Panthers, 2-1, in Sunrise on Tuesday.
The Jets hit the 5-win mark for the first time in franchise history.
“That’s awesome,” Connor said. “This group, it’s so good, they push each other every day and everyone wants to strive to get better.”
Steve Mason made 36 saves to get the win in a rare start.
“It was nice to get back out there from a personal standpoint,” Mason said. “The game was back and forth. We had that three-goal lead and let them back into it, but coming out in overtime is the main thing and it puts us in a position to keep fighting hopefully for first place in our division.”
Artturi Lehkonen, Paul Byron, Kerby Rychel, and Alex Galchenyuk recorded goals for the Habs in the loss.
Patrik Laine, Sami Niku, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Jack Roslovic scored for Winnipeg in regulation.
“That (50 win season) means you’re a consistent hockey team. To get that many wins over the course [of the season], you can’t have a lot of lulls. And we certainly did it while battling some injuries. We’ve had a lot of key guys out of our lineup,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said after the game.

Carey Price made 27 saves in the loss.
“I appreciated the effort tonight,” Montreal head coach Claude Julien said. “It’s disappointing to lose, always a bit frustrating, especially the way the guys competed against a team that has a lot more depth than us.”
The game was the 557th for Price, the most by a goalie in Montreal franchise history.
“It was definitely an emotional moment for myself,” Price said. “I didn’t expect it to be, but that video and that ovation was something that I really needed. I’m really thankful and I really appreciate that.”
