In Vancouver, the visiting Winnipeg Jets put on a show in a 4-2 win over the Canucks on Saturday night.
Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves in the win.
The Jets improved to 33-14-5 off their third straight win.
The Jets improved on their woeful power play with a a pair of strikes in four chanced.
“Our specialty teams came through for us tonight finally and they won a big game for us,” Jets coach Rick Bowness said. “It’s nice to see the power play get a couple because we all know we’ve been in a bit of a drought there, and the penalty killers were outstanding, and [Hellebuyck] made the big saves and we got the timely goals.”
After a scoreless opening stanza, Noah Juulsen scored with 13 seconds gone in the middle frame for a 1-0 lead to the Canucks.
“The goal doesn’t matter at all, obviously,” Juulsen said. “You know the third [goal against] I went for the hit, ended up in the back of our net, and the fourth one is on me as well.”
Gabriel Vilardi hit off the power play at 5:16 to tie the game, 1-1.
“That was really fun,” Vilardi said. “It was a good atmosphere, and obviously it’s more fun because we won, but those are the games you dream of playing. A good atmosphere, the crowd was great, ‘Hockey Night in Canada,’ it’s cool.”
Sean Monahan hit off a Jets power play midway through the second period to givem a 2-1 lead. For Monahan, it was first goal with the Jets since his trade from Montreal Canadiens.
“The power play has been kind of fighting it a little bit, so to get one on there and obviously take a lead, it’s a good feeling,” Monahan said. “We’ve been working at it and we’ve had a few looks, but starting to get some chemistry now and starting to be able to read off the guys, so I think things are going to start clicking here.”
The Canucks got even, 2-2, when Tyler Myers scored at 14:19 off a turnover.
“For the most part we played a good game,” Myers said. “We’ll look at some of the things we can clean up, but guys were into it tonight.”
The Canucks dropped to 37-13-6, snapping a three-game winning streak.
“I thought 5-on-5 were really good,” Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said. “They won especially in the special teams battle, but I thought we were better 5-on-5. There’s a lot of care in that room, so I’m actually happy with the effort.”
In the the third period, the Jets locked the defensive part of their game, and added two goals for the win.
Vilardi hit for his double at 7:47 for a 3-2 to the Jets.
“I knew he was going to be stepping up, their [defensemen] were doing that all night, so great play by [Connor] by just coming in behind me, and obviously (he) made an unbelievable pass to Gabe,” the Jets’ Mark Scheifele said.
Scheifele pushed the advantage to 4-2 midway through the third.
“Just lost a little composure on those plays,” Tocchet said. “That’s a good learning lesson for us. You just got to be careful of those things, not run out of position.”
Thatcher Demko made 24 saves in the loss.
