Jets stumble in Detroit

In Detroit, the Red Wings posted seven goals from seven different skaters on Tuesday night in a 7-5 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Ville Husso made 32 saves in the win.

“Thank God for him tonight,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said of Seider. “I like that we scored and I like that we won the game, but that might have been our worst performance of the year.”

Detroit set the offensive tone with a goal on their first shot of the game from Jake Walman for a 1-0 lead.

They extended the lead to 3-0 on goals from Jonatan Berggren and Oskar Sundqvist .

“We’ve talked a lot about being better off the start,” Jets forward Sam Gagner said. “That has to be an area of growth moving forward.”

The Jets dropped to 26-14-1, and had a five-game win streak snapped.

Neal Pionk got the Jets on the board for a 3-1 score.

Detroit pushed the lead back to three goals early in the middle frame on a strike from Dominik Kubalik .

But the Jets rallied for two goals from Sam Gagner and Nate Schmidt  in the second.

“Our penalty kill has been amazing all year and we’ve been pretty disciplined,” Gagner said. “That’s just one of those things that happens, and it came just as we were gathering momentum.”

Dylan Larkin stopped the Jets run with a goal to make it 5-3.

“When we got it to 6-5, I think everyone on the bench thought we were going to tie the game,” Schmidt said. “We hadn’t played our best game, and we’d given up so many good chances, but we still had a chance to win the game.

In the third period, Nikolaj Ehlers  pulled the Jets back to within one, 5-4, but Robby Fabbri  scored for Detroit for a 6-4 lead.

Mark Scheifele  hit for a power play goal to get the Jets close, again, at 6-5.

Lucas Raymond hit an empty-net goal with 80 seconds left for the 7-5 final.

“We were getting a little nervous on the bench, but this was a big game to win,” Raymond said. “It felt really good walking away from here with a win.”

Connor Hellebuyck made 16 saves in the loss.

“Connor is our guy, we all know that,” Winnipeg coach Rick Bowness said. “He’s won a lot of games for us for this year, and he’ll win a lot more. We could have scored enough goals to win this game, but we didn’t get there.”
