PHILADELPHIA – The Flyers surrendered three period goals on Sunday night to the Winnipeg Jets to fall behind, 3-0, they rallied to tie the game early in the third period, but ended up yielding two goals in the third in a 5-3 loss.
Winnipeg’s Karson Kuhlman stopped the Flyers’ run when he scored in the third to snap the 3-3 tie and give the Jets the game-winner.
“We jumped out of the gates great,” Kuhlman said. “A back to back, they were on one as well, so it’s always kind of a toss-up. We just wanted to play our game right from the drop of the puck. I think we did that and gave ourselves a little bit of a cushion. Obviously wanted to play a better 60-minute game than that but ended up with the win.”
Philadelphia’s Kevin Hayes scored twice in the game, once late in the second period to get the Flyers within one at 3-2, and early in the third to knot it at 3-3. Both goals came off the power play.
Winnipeg improved to 31-16-1.
David Rittich made 28 saves in the Jets win.
The Jets broke out of the gate fast with three straight goals from Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Kyle Connor, and Mark Scheifele
“We’ve got a lot of skill on this team, and we know in the room when we commit to defending and playing the right way, we’re going to score enough goals this year to be able to offset that,” Winnipeg’s Brenden Dillon said. “We committed to it for a good chunk of the game, enough to win tonight.”
The Jets’ Kevin Stenlund added a late empty-net goal for the 5-3 final.
The Flyers dropped to 20-21-7.
“We stuck with it and grinded out,” the Flyers’ Owen Tippett said. “Obviously, it’s a lot of hockey here in the last week, I think it was five in seven nights. So obviously just trying to keep the energy up and keep our feet moving.”
Ivan Provorov had a goal in the first period for the Flyers.
Felix Sandstrom made 25 saves in the Flyers loss.
“I think we played great and battled the whole game,” Sandstrom said. “It’s tough to have to start like that. Just shows how hard this group works and how hard they worked today.”
