Jets rally with wild third period, win In OT

WINNIPEG – Opening up their sixth season in Winnipeg, the Jets were looking for big things from a very young line-up that has five rookies. The team made some bold moves sending some players down to the Manitoba Moose and the jury is out as fans are beginning to get antsy and want a winner.

The Carolina Hurricanes were visiting the MTS Centre and were also icing a very young team with some new faces who were looking to spoil the party in Winnipeg.WPG Jets logo

The young line-up for the Jets featured Patrik Laine the second overall pick in this summer’s draft and also had 2015 first-rounder Kyle Connor along with highly touted prospect defenceman Josh Morrissey the 2013 first-round pick . All the young guns were here and ready go.

These two teams didn’t disappoint as the Jets rallied with a big third period come back and won 5-4 in overtime to send the Jets faithful home happy.

Winnipeg was led by their new captain Blake Wheeler who finished the game with a goal and two assists including a beauty saucer pass to set up his linemate Mark Scheifele who finished off the Canes in overtime.

Jets fans also got a glimpse of what Laine can do as he sniped his first career NHL goal and picked up a helper in his debut.

Mathieu Perrault tied the game up with the net empty after converting a very nice pass from Wheeler. Newcomer Shawn Matthias opened the scoring with his first of the season.

One thing is certain, this young Jets team may have troubles in the defensive zone but there will be no shortage of excitement and speed.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23 of 27 Carolina shots and got the win for the Jets.

The Hurricanes got goals from Victor Rask , Lee Stempniak, Jeff Skinner , and Jordan Staal.

Winnipeg will head to Minnesota to take on the Wild before coming back home to host the Bruins on Monday night.
