Jets rally to down Oilers in OT, 3-2

In Edmonton, the Oilers took a 2-0 lead on the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, and then watched it evaporate into a 3-2 loss in extra time. The Oilers also lost Connor McDavid to apparent injury. The injury happened with 4:20 left in the third.

“It appeared to be muscular more than anything as I watched the play. We’ll have more information [Sunday],” Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. “When he wasn’t available down the stretch and in overtime, it was an opportunity for others to step up.

“I thought it was more him coming up the ice and just something felt off for him. That’s what it looked like from the bench, but I haven’t even rewatched it yet.”

After falling behind 0-2, Winnipeg’s Josh Morrissey  hit for a power play goal midway through the first period to trim the deficit for the Jets to 2-1.

Connor Hellebuyck made 38 saves in the win.

“Yeah, well, that first 10 minutes was a little ugly. But what I liked about it, we lost that first 10 minutes badly, but we recovered and we started to skate,” Winnipeg coach Rick Bowness said. “We were way too much on our heels, giving them way too much respect early.

“I thought when we started to skate, we started to turn things around a little bit.”

Vladislav Namestnikov hit for a shorthanded goal with under two minutes left in the second period for a 2-2 tie.

“Special teams are huge, and with the power play they have over there, you don’t want to give them too many opportunities,” Morrissey said. “For him and ‘Vladdy’ to make that play, they’re such smart, crafty players. They compete hard.

“We know how big those short-handed goals can be toward winning a game. It ended up being the tying goal and it was massive.”

The game stayed that way through the third period.

Darnell Nurse and Evan Bouchard  scored in the first period to stake the Oilers to the early 2-0 lead.

Mark Scheifele  hit for the game-winner with 67 seconds left in the extra session for the 3-2 final.

“Yeah, great play all around. Good help by ( Kyle Connor ) on the face-off and from there, [Morrissey] made a fantastic pass and just happy to be there,” Scheifele said. “There was zero quit. Right from, obviously, going down early was tough, but we just kept on battling back.

“We didn’t try doing anything too crazy on one shift and just battled back.”

The winner came off a deflection of a shot by Morrissey  .

Stuart Skinner made 24 saves in the loss.
