Jets lose to Caps, 5-2

In Winnipeg, the visiting Washington Capitals hit for four goals in the middle frame on Sunday and handed the Jets a 5-2 loss.

Trevor van Riemsdyk got the offense rolling in the second period to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.

Evgeny Kuznetsov pushed the advantage to 2-0.

The lead ballooned to 3-0 on a penalty shot strike from the Caps’ Marcus Johansson.

“We had a pretty solid first period, I thought, and then our power play came up big,” Lindgren said. “[Johansson] with the big penalty shot goal. To score four goals, as a goalie you love it. Credit to our guys again for competing tonight and working hard and putting the puck in the net.”

The Caps improved to 14-12-4.

Charlie Lindgren made 29 saves in the win.

The Jets dropped to 18-8-1.

Lars Eller extended the Capitals’ lead to 4-0 by the end of the frame.

“We got contributions from a lot of places, and Charlie was so strong in net,” Eller said. “Just one of those 60-minute efforts where you know it was only those first five minutes in the third where they pushed and were able to get two quick ones.

“After that, I just think we responded really well. “[We] didn’t panic and kept them from getting to chances after that. So, it was a really overall good game tonight.”

Adam Lowry and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored in the third period to get the Jets within 4-2.

Alex Ovechkin hit an empty net for the 5-2 final.

Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves in the Winnipeg loss.
