In Winnipeg, the spiraling season of the Jets is getting uglier. On Saturday night, the Ottawa Senators doubled-up the Jets, 4-2.
Filip Gustavsson made 27 saves in the win.
Tim Stutzle picked up his first NHL hat trick in the win.
“I think we played a great game as a team,” Stutzle said. “[Gustavsson] was unbelievable as well. He kept us in the game and had some huge saves. It was a great team win today.”
Mark Scheifele and Mason Appleton scored for the Jets.
“At the start of the game we have a wave of chances and the goalie made some big saves,” Scheifele said. “I think we’ve just got to sharpen up a little bit and bear down when we get those chances. And that can change the entire outcome of the game.”
Connor Brown added a single marker for the Senators.
“[Stutzle] is just an elite player,” Brown said. “We saw that tonight, and I think we’re going to see more of it. He’s got elite-level talent.”
The Jets have dropped eight of their last nine and their record fell to 28-22-3.
“Twenty goals in a shortened season is special for a guy that hasn’t scored in that range,” Senators head coach D.J. Smith said. “That’s phenomenal for him. And then Stutzle’s first hat trick– great, it’s good things to see. Obviously, he’s coming on here as of late.”
Connor Hellebuyck made 19 saves in the loss.
“We’ve played these guys twice in the last three games and given up 20 shots each game, so by NHL standards it’s a pretty good effort as well,” the Jets’ Blake Wheeler said. “But you do have to give these guys credit, especially when they’ve got the lead. They did a good job of clogging up the neutral zone. We had some looks and just our execution wasn’t quite there. Their goalie had another good night there as well.”
