In Ottawa, the Winnipeg Jets found a complete game effort and defeated the Seantors, 4-1, on Thursday night.
Chris Tierney scored late in the third period to spoil a shut out bid.
“They were a step quicker than us all night, right from the get-go,” Senators head coach D.J. Smith said. “They came in, took us seriously, and came after us. They put it in, they beat us on the majority of 50-50 pucks, and the right result happened.”
Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves for the win.
The Jets’ Nikolaj Ehlers and Mark Scheifele led the offense with a goal each and two points apiece in the win.
“You’ve got to move fast and move the puck quickly; we had lots of support there, lots of conversation on the ice, lots of communication, guys calling for pucks,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. “And then we got off to a pretty good run of going from our end to their end.”
Adam Lowry scored an empty-net goal in the second and Blake Wheeler added a strike for 4-0 Jets lead.
“He’s (Lowry) the guy who gets different wingers all the time. [He’s] a guy who scored 15 in this league (in 2016-17),” Maurice said. “We think it’s there. It’s the face-off goal
the other night where he goes to the goal and gets a tip on it. Big man driving the net. Some of it is confidence, some of it is rhythm. With our injuries he’s getting some power-play time, he’s getting the [penalty-kill] time, he’s playing a big-minute game for us, so he’s in that rhythm, he feels good.”
Matt Murray got the start for the Sens, but yielded all four goals and made 22 saves.
Marcus Hogberg mopped up the third period and made three saves.
