Jets hold off late surge by Panthers for 6-4 win Connor hits for double in win

In Winnipeg, the Jets came back from a season opening stinker to hold off the Florida Panthers on Saturday for 6-4 win, their first of the season.

Kyle Connor  hit for a double and three points for the Jets in the win.

Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves in the win.

The Jets’ Mark Scheifele and the Panthers’ Sam Reinhart exchanged goals in the first period for a 1-1 tie after the first 20 minutes of play.

The Panthers took a 2-1 lead just 25 seconds into the middle frame on a goal from Evan Rodrigues, but the Jets replied 10 seconds later on COnnor’s first of the game for 2-2 tie.

Winnipeg scored twice just ahead of the midway point of the second period on markers from Morgan Barron and Dylan DeMelo for a4-2 advantage.

Mason Appleton‘s goal at 14:17 of the third pushed the lead to 5-2 for the Jets.

Florida then narrowed the deficit to one goal on strikes from Carter Verhaeghe at 16:31, and Rodrigues at 17:36 for a 5-4 score.

Connor then hit an empty net on the power play with just over a minute left on the game clock for the 6-4 final.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves in the Panthers loss.
