Jets get past Detroit, 5-3

In Detroit Friday night, the Winnipeg Jets found a complete effort and managed to stay away from bad bounces in a stirring 5-3 win over the Red Wings.

On a night when video review turned in favor of the Jets, Brandon Tanev scored twice in the third period to net his first two NHL goals, to help Winnipeg to the win.

“The atmosphere here in the building, first time playing in Joe Louis and obviously scoring my first goal, was something incredible, something I’ll remember for a long time,” Tanev said.WPG Jets logo

His two goals tied and then won the game.

“To get two and to have them be the difference in such an important game, it’s a good payoff for him,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said. “I hope he takes all the confidence in the world from it that he can make those plays, and that’ll be the key for Brandon. If he can play that game and have a bit of finish to his game, I mean, that was a great signing for us.”

Patrik Laine, Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers  also scored for the Jets who were missing seven players due to injuries but played a cohesive game throughout the match in Detroit.

“Just watching the way those guys played with each other, that’s as much fun as I’ve had behind the bench in a long time,” Maurice said. “It was a great win, a great, great win.”

Luke Glendening, Henrik Zetterberg and Justin Abdelkader  were the Wings’ scorers.

Two Jets goals came off scrambles in front of the Detroit cage and resulted from missed assignments by Red Wings defense.

“I think mental. Every play matters a ton, and we can’t let guys free,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said.
