Jets get closer to Central lead with 6-5 win over Ottawa

In Ottawa Monday night, the visiting Winnipeg Jets had a hard time with the Senators but managed a messy, 6-5, win keep pressure on the Nashville Predators atop the Central Division.

“It was kind of a ping pong game, almost,” Jets forward Andrew Copp said. “Not a lot of clean plays made, a little bit of sloppiness, but huge that we can find a way to win those games.”

The Jets improved to 49-20-10 and trail the Predators by five points with six points still to be had.

Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves in picking up the win.

Blake Wheeler scored twice and Copp, Mathieu Perreault, Josh Morrissey, and Brandon Tanev scored for the Jets.

“[Each line is] not just out there to hold water,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. “They’re out there to drive the pace of the game. Each line over the last month has gotten really hot and been the difference for a lot of wins for us, and we’ve been pretty fortunate to score the way we have.”

Matt Duchene scored two goals (200th career goal) of his own for the Senators.

“It sucks that it comes in a loss,” Duchene said. “But I wanted to get there before the end of the year. I kind of had it circled as a goal to try and get to.”

Christian Wolanin (first NHL goal) scored and Thomas Chabot added two goals as well for the Sens.

Craig Anderson made 34 saves in the loss.

“We showed some character coming back,” Senators head coach Guy Boucher said. “But we made too many mistakes defensively to allow us to win.”
