In Ottawa, the Jets scored an even strength goal as well as a power-play marker and a shorthanded strike in a 3-2 win over the Senators on Wednesday.
Laurent Brossoit made 27 saves in the win.
“Second period, especially, he was really square and right to pucks that came to the net,” Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice said. “A lot of what [Ottawa] will do is throw pucks from tough angles and try to get a stick on it. It’s kind of funny. It’s either not dangerous at all because it’s such a bad angle shot, or it’s very dangerous, so he was good.”
After the Senators took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on a goal from , the Jets responded with a goal in the first and two more in the third period for a 3-1 lead.
Nick Paul staked the Sens to the 1-0 lead.
“The coaching staff and all the guys did an unbelievable job of making me feel comfortable and just making it a fun night for me,” the Senators’ Jacob Bernard-Docker said. “Obviously we didn’t come out on the winning side there, but everyone was nice enough to come up to me after the game and say congratulations and take a picture with me. It was a really special moment for me.”
Mark Scheifele scored before the end of the first to tie it, 1-1.
Mathieu Perreault scored off the power-play for a 2-1 lead, and Trevor Lewis struck for the shorthanded goal for the 3-1 lead, the eventual game-winner.
“They play a hard game. They don’t give you any easy ice out there,” Perrault said. “We just kind of stuck with it. We’ve got to play a hard game as well and chip away at it, and we were able in the third period to find a way to get a couple goals and get a win, so it’s a big win for us, especially after what happened last game. We didn’t really like our game or our effort, so it was a good bounce-back game.”
Josh Norris scored with 10 seconds left in the game for the 3-2 final.
Matt Murray made 32 saves in the loss.
“I thought he was alright,” Ottawa head coach D.J. Smith said. “I thought he played hard. We didn’t give [Winnipeg] much through two, and then all of a sudden we’re giving them Grade A chances. That’s a tough game for a goalie, where he doesn’t see a whole lot and then all of a sudden it’s a breakaway. It’s good to get him back out there. I thought he battled through a lot of shots from the point and looked a lot more confident.”
