In Winnipeg, the Jets took a 4-1 lead over the Ottawa Senators on Monday night then had to hang on as the Sens rallied for two goals in the third period to close within 4-3.
Pierre-Luc Dubois struck for two Winnipeg goals.
“We had the right mentality offensively and I thought we didn’t spend much time in our zone in the first two [periods], and even in the third for a good chunk,” Dubois said. “It’s never going to be easy and you’ve got to deal with adversity because stuff like that is going to happen late as the season goes on into the playoffs.”
Connor Hellebuyck made 20 saves to get the win.
Josh Norris and Connor Brown scored for the Senators.
“We turned way too many pucks over, we weren’t desperate enough. We battled back, too little too late,” Ottawa coach D.J. Smith said. “That’s a desperate team over there and we weren’t ready when the game started. Maybe to be expected after an emotional game, but we just had too many guys not going tonight.”
Adam Lowry and Kyle Connor had single markers for the Jets.
Ryan Dzingel also scored for Ottawa.
Dubois gave the Jets an early 1-0 lead off a feed from Blake Wheeler.
“He’s a great passer, so he makes it easy out there sometimes,” Dubois said. ” … He sees the ice so well that I just have to get into that open space and it’s more often than not on my blade. He just makes it really easy for me out there.”
Andrew Copp had two assists in the Jets win.
“Nothing is ever given to Andrew, and he’s developed his game,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. “[He’s] really worked hard on becoming an offensive player and he’s always had that defensive gift. … He’s worked on his hands, he’s worked on making plays.”
Anton Forsberg made 42 saves in the loss.
“They got an early goal there that was my mistake in the second period there, and then they kind of pushed us back all that period,” Forsberg said. “They played fast right off the bat. They were flying out there and we weren’t really ready at the beginning.”
