In Detroit Friday night, the Red Wings seemed tantalizingly close to a regulation win with the Winnipeg Jets in town.
But, Dustin Byfuglien struck for the game-winner late in the third period to send the Jets to a 2-1 win and keep the Wings winless in regulation this season.
“He’s such an important piece to our team,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said. “Early on in the game he made some great reads. That seam pass he picked off in the third period, he has that ability to read the play like very few other people. He does it defensively as well. He’s just hard to stop.”
Laurent Brossoit made 27 saves to get the win, his third win in three starts for the Jets.
“We had a lot of good looks,” Kyle Connor said. “On the first couple we had good entries, we were on the puck and we had good entries too. It was a matter of time.”
Connor had the other Jets’ goal.
The Red Wings dropped to 1-7-2 on the season and were at least competitive in the loss.
Andreas Athanasiou scored the lone Detroit goal.
“I thought we skated with one of the best teams in the NHL,” Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin said. “We competed. I thought our tempo matched theirs in the first period, if not better.”

Jimmy Howard made 38 saves in the loss.
“You give a team that many opportunities on the power play they’re going to find a way to put the puck in the back of the net,” Howard said.
