Jets edge Canes, 2-1 Brossoit made 42 saves in the win

In Winnipeg, the visiting Carolina Hurricanes tightened up on their defense, but their offense let them down on Monday in a 2-1 loss to the Jets.

Laurent Brossoit made 42 saves in the win.

“Today I felt more like myself, more like I did last year,” Brossoit said. “Now I’m looking to harness that and continue on that path.

“It’s kind of funny, whether you’re the team that’s getting lots of shots against or you’re the team that’s shooting a lot, it always seems to be the other team that gets the higher danger chances on the counter and off the rush, and that seemed to be what happened tonight.”

The Jets improved to 14-8-2.

“[Brossoit] was pretty incredible,” the Jets’ Nikolaj Ehlers said. “Our goalies have been outstanding all year. … It’s a huge win. After our three-game losing streak there, to get back and get two wins in a row, we needed that. We needed to get back on track and play better. We’ve done that.”

The Jets’ Kyle Connor opened the scoring in the first stanza when he gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead at 16:58.

“The first three games we played together we created a lot of chances, and yeah, we got a couple,” Ehlers said of his linemates Connor and Scheifele. “Last game (a 3-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday), we thought that we could have had a lot more. Tonight, playing against a team that’s not going to give you a lot, we were able to create some pretty good scoring chances and scored two.”

Carolina dropped to 14-9-1.

“We played a good game and that’s a really good team,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “I thought we pretty much dominated the first period, and we’re down one. That’s just the way it goes sometimes. And we weren’t able to get the back of the net. The middle period, we were even, and the third period, again, we were pretty good. We had a lot of opportunities, we just weren’t able to find the back of the net.”

Ehlers stretched the advantage to 2-0 at 11:39 of the middle frame.

“He (Mark Scheifele) knows where guys are,” Ehlers said of teh goal’s setup. “He is pretty good at reading where guys are going to be as well. He’s done that play before, and I knew that going to the net he was going behind the goal line, so I was trying to find that high slot to be able to get into a scoring position, and he found me. So all around, I think that was a pretty nice passing play from [Connor] and [Scheifele].”

Martin Necas s was the lone striker for Carolina, his goal came with 51 seconds left on the clock to break up the shutout bid.

Antti Raanta made 20 saves in the loss.

“Lots of games this year I feel like we’re kind of dominating if you look at the game from a shots perspective,” Necas said. “But we’re not winning, so, like I said, [we need to] try to create more Grade A [chances] and get in front.”
