Jets drop baggage in second straight loss

In Edmonton, the visiting Winnipeg Jets posted two first period goals on Saturday and then promptly surrendered one to the Oilers in the first period and three in the third period to lose, 4-2.

Connor McDavid had a goal and two points in the game to reach 60 on the season.

“I thought we did a great job of just holding on to the game and not letting them get to [a 3-1 lead],” McDavid said. “That’s where [Mike Smith] steps in, and he was great again, and let us work our way back into the game. It took all night long, but I thought it was a real good team win.”

In the third period outburst, Leon Draisaitl put the Oilers ahead

“It was a great pass from [McDavid] and it made it easy for me to put it in,” Draisaitl said. “I thought we played good all game. That’s a really good team over there, they don’t give you much, they have lots of skill and they can hurt you, so you have to stay patient against a team like that, and I thought we did a great job of that tonight again.”with a goal.

Mike Smith made 29 saves for the victory.

Andrew Copp (power play) and Pierre-Luc Dubois opened the scoring in the game for the 2-0 lead to the Jets.

“Consecutive-game losses isn’t a sign of necessarily anything terrible brewing,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. “We’ve just completed nine playoff games against teams that are in the playoffs, seven of them on the road, and I think we ended up about .500 in that mix (4-4-1). So we’re not bragging, but we’re not dejected.”

Darnell Nurse also scored for the Oilers.

“I thought it was a really competitive game,” Oilers head coach Dave Tippett said. “We got down; the first power-play goal is one that bounced off two or three shin pads and goes in, and the second one is a double deflection. We’re down 2-0, but I thought it was a fairly even period, and the goal by Connor to get it back to 2-1 was a huge goal for us just to give us some momentum.”

Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves in the loss.

“It’s the first time we’ve lost two in a row, so I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of panic,” Copp said. “These two games definitely didn’t go the way we wanted them to. You’ve got to be on the right side of the puck. I don’t want to say perfect, but those two guys [McDavid and Draisaitl], one little play where guys were on different pages can end up in the back of the net. You can’t give them any time and space. They’ll burn you if you do.”
