In Winnipeg, the Dallas Stars scored two third period goals on Tuesday night, to force extra time with the Jets.
Overtime settled nothing, and the Jets won the match on skills, 4-3.
Eric Comrie made 24 saves for the Jets in the win.
Jason Robertson and Tyler Seguin were the Dallas strikers in the third period.
“We were down two goals going into the third period and we were able to tie it up, so I was very encouraged with the third period,” Dallas head coach Rick Bowness said. “I always say when you lose in a shootout, you don’t lose the game, you lose in a skills contest. For 65 minutes, we played them even and they scored the extra goal in the shootout. But again, it’s 3-1 going into the third and you tie it up and we had some really good looks in the third and I was encouraged by that.”
Jamie Benn had a first period goal for Dallas to tie the game, 1-1.
“I just don’t think we were playing aggressive enough,” Benn said. “They were coming at us and then we took some penalties. On their power play, they were zipping it around.”
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored his seventh of the season for the Jets.
Paul Stastny gave the Jets an early 1-0 lead in the first period.
Winnipeg took a 2-1 lead with 22 seconds gone in the middle frame when Josh Morrissey scored off the power play.
“You look at the guys that I’m out there with on the power play, some pretty talented players,” Morrissey said. [Schmidt] has been lights out on that pass over to me, and when you have that many weapons, someone’s going to make a great play.”
Mark Scheifele returned to the Jets lineup after being released from NHL COVID-19 protocol; his skills goal was deciding strike for the Jets.
“It was awesome to be back for the boys,” Scheifele said. “I had a blast. It was huge to get the win and so fun to be back. It was my first game back in front of the Jets fans again, so it felt even better.”
Braden Holtby made 32 saves in the Stars loss.
