Jets cruise by Devils, 5-2

The New Jersey Devils got off to a fast start this season but have languished since and on Sunday night they lost their third straight, 5-2, to the Jets in Winnipeg.

Mark Scheifele struck twice and had three points in the win as the Jets improved to 10-5-1.

“We’ve been playing the right way,” Scheifele said. “We’ve been in the right spots. Lines are starting to figure out each other. A little more consistent on our routes. That’s what we want. We want to continue to build off this.”

Connor Hellebuyck made 34 saves to pick up the win.

Jack Roslovic, Nikolaj Ehlers and Mathieu Perreault added goals for the Jets.

“We feel if we take care of our end and stay underneath the puck and do the little things, support each other [with] little chips and really with the smart, easy plays, it gives ourselves a chance to create some offense coming up the ice and we capitalized a couple of times,” the Jets’ Blake Wheeler said after picking up two assists to get to 500 points with the current iteration of the franchise.

Brett Seney (first NHL goal) and Blake Coleman scored for the Devils.

“You have to be able to find ways to win, and we didn’t on the trip. But I think lots of times you get caught up in the emotion of not winning or the emotion of that,” Devils coach John Hynes said. “But I think when you look at some of these games that we’ve gone through, there were opportunities we could have won.”

Cory Schneider made 23 saves in the loss.

“It just seems like every time we do make a mistake or there’s a breakdown, [the puck] just ends up in the back of our net,” Devils forward Taylor Hall said. “Unfortunately, it’s coming at a tough time and we can’t seem to get out of it right now.”

New Jersey fell to 6-8-1 with the loss.
