DENVER – The Winnipeg Jets could have folded after a tough loss Friday night and falling into the basement; they haven’t won against the Colorado Avalanche this season but tonight they came out all business and came away with a 4-2 road win. Maybe the road will be just what the doctor ordered for this team.
“I would say since the All-Star break we haven’t played a good game,” Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said. “We’re not sharp, and it’s too bad because it comes at the wrong moment. We put ourselves in a playoff spot and we had a chance with three games at home to start where we left off. We should be disappointed right now. We cannot be happy about the way we’ve been playing in the last three games. We’re making too many mistakes.”
Michael Hutchinson got the start for the Jets and he had a strong game stopping 32 shots to pick up the win; he improves to 6-10-1 on the season.
“The whole year we’ve played them well,” said Jets left wing Andrew Ladd, who scored late in the first period to tie it 1-1. “There were a couple of games we couldn’t put the puck in the net and they were able to hold on for the win. Tonight, we got some key goals, we got a power-play goal, and that was the difference.”
Chris Thorburn and Cody McLeod dropped the mitts early in the first period trying to spark their respective teams and it seemed to get the Jets going more as they controlled most of the physical play as well as the puck in the offensive zone.
Drew Stafford led the way for the Jets as he had two goals and one assist, his 15th and 16th goals of the season. He also finished the game with 6 shots on goal.
“We needed a response tonight, especially the way last night went,” Stafford said. “Where we are in the standings (last in the Central Division), we need these points. For us to come out and have an effort like we did tonight is huge for us.”
The Jets got goals from Andrew Ladd his 13th and Mathieu Perreault got his eighth goal of the year.
The Jets power play continued to score as they got a power play goal in their fifth straight game.
Nik Ehlers had his first NHL fight as he dropped the gloves with Tyson Barrie and did well and the Jets bench loved seeing this and went nuts.
The Jets see themselves sitting eight points back of the final wild card spot and have a long road back.
They will head to St. Louis to face the Blues on Tuesday night.
