TORONTO – The Jets were coming off their worst performance of the season in a 5-1 loss in Montreal on Sunday night, they were looking for a better effort and result and they got just that as they earned a 4-2 win in Toronto.
The Jets got back to playing their game , the hard hitting, fast paced in your face physical style that they are known for, They also had some luck on their side as forward Alex Burmistrov went from outhouse to penthouse after taking a careless couple of
penalties, one in the first period that cost the team a goal as the Leafs scored on the power play , the second minor came late in the third but his teammates bailed him out and just as he stepped out the box he had the puck on his stick and ended up scoring the winner .
“Oh, I can’t even explain how big this goal is for me,” Burmistrov said. “It has been tough for me since I came back. It is a great feeling now for us to win the game and for me to score that big goal.
“When you sit in the box, the first thing you are hoping is that we’re not going to give up a goal; you hope time will run out,” Burmistrov said. “Then you also hope when time runs out someone on our team will have the puck and give it to me for a breakaway.”
Ondrej Pavelec made the start in goal and was sharp when he was called upon stopping 24 of 26 shots to get his fourth win of the season.
Manitoba native James Reimer took the loss for the Leafs despite stopping 30 of 33 shots. He falls to 2-2-1 on the season.
The Jets got goals from Dustin Byfuglien his third , Mark Scheifele his fifth , Burmistrov his second and Bryan Little added an empty netter his sixth of the season.
The Jets brought out the physical play from the leafs as this was a hard hitting affair as both teams had over 40 hits each including some huge checks from big Dustin Byfuglien who was on his game all over the ice tonight.
Toronto got goals from P.A. Parenteau his second, Leo Komarov his fifth.
“I liked our looks,” Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. “We had a great look from Brad Boyes late in the game on the power play, and James van Riemsdyk had a great look on a breakaway. Lots of good things happened for our hockey club. We looked like a competitive, organized group today. I’m disappointed with the outcome.”
The Jets who have a trio of former Barrie Colts players from the Ontario Hockey League Burmistrov, Sheifele, and Little all had strong games back in front of some friends.
Winnipeg will head to Ottawa to finish off the back end of this back-to-back through Ontario against the Senators tomorrow before heading home for a Saturday night game against the Flyers.
Notes: The Jets recalled forward Patrice Cormier from the Manitoba Moose as rookie Andrew Copp was placed on IR with a minor injury and sent back to Winnipeg for observation.
