The first period started with a Columbus attack on the Washington net shooting 13 shots to 3. Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby put on a dazzling display of netminding stopping all 13 shots as the defense was non-existent and the offense was dead on arrival.

At 11:34 Capitals right winger Tom Wilson made a devastating hit on Jackets right winger Josh Anderson sending Anderson to the locker room for the rest of the period. The score was 0-0 at the end of the first.

Columbus resumed their onslaught of the Washington net in the second period turning it into a shooting gallery with 13 shots to 3. The Jackets drew first blood at 6:32 in the second with a goal by Anthony Duclair, assisted by Oliver Bjorkstrand and Zach Werenski.

“It was a good pass by Bjorky from the neutral zone there,” Duclair said. “It was a 2-on-1 with Wenny there. I was thinking pass at first and then I saw the defenseman open up for me and I just wanted to shoot it. Lucky, it went in.”

The Capitals showed some life in the third period shooting 14 shots on net in a desperate attempt to tie the game. Capitals right wing Devante Smith-Pelly almost scored hitting the post. Wilson had a few good looks on net but was stopped by Bobrovsky.

The Jackets added to their score with a goal by Nick Foligno at 3:47 to play assisted by defenseman Seth Jones and Ryan Murray.

Artemi Panarin put the game to bed with an empty netter at 19:50 with the assist going to Josh Anderson.
