Isles push point streak to 14

PHILADELPHIA – The New York Islanders improved to 13-0-1 in their 14 games Saturday night with a 4-3 win over the Flyers after a skills demonstration.

Thomas Greiss made 28 saves to get the win.

Sean Couturier, Ivan Provorov and Oskar Lindblom scored for the Flyers.

“We did not play the way we need to play [in the third period],” Provorov said. “We sat back and started making mistakes, turning the puck over in the neutral zone and not getting the puck out of our zone when we needed to.”

Anthony Beauvillier struck twice in regulation for the Isles.

“I think he’s just using his assets,” Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. “He’s a great skater, he’s got confidence with the puck, he’s got nice hands, he can score. And he’s going to the hard areas. And because he’s going to the hard areas, he’s getting rewarded.”

Mathew Barzal had a goal for New York in regulation.

“We were definitely in a hole there going into the third,” Barzal said. “At that point, you just want to go out and get one and go from there. … I don’t know what it is with this group. We knew we’d be in the fight right to the end, and that’s what we did tonight.”

Jordan Eberle and Barzal scored in the skills portion of the evening’s events.

“The way we played in the second, there was definitely belief and hope because we had some momentum,” the Islanders Brock Nelson said. “It wasn’t like we were getting outplayed the whole time. … We had chances and looks and just didn’t capitalize.”

Brian Elliott made 33 saves in the loss.

“You’ve just got to close out games,” Elliott said. “There’s little plays like getting the puck out when you have a chance, allowing guys to change, just keeping fresh bodies on the ice and not getting stuck out there.”
