PHILADELPHIA — It was there for the taking, a big two-point game with the New York Islanders and an early 1-0 lead.
The Philadelphia Flyers could not hold the advantage and Anthony Beauvillier made them pay when he scored with 3:41 gone in extra time to give the Isles a 2-1 win.
“It’s one of those instinct plays,” Beauvillier said. “It just happens and then you kind of hope for the best. It’s a play where you kind of go behind the net and you see the goalie isn’t really there and you kind of go for it.
“I was fortunate; it kind of hit a skate and went in the net tonight. It’s one of those plays where you just kind of do it and sometimes you get lucky with it.”
The winner came off a wraparound.
“[The Flyers] were on top of us a little bit, [but] we survived it,” New York head coach Barry Trotz said. ” … They were a committed group tonight and when you run into that, you need someone to rise and tonight Ilya did that for us. He made some real key saves at key moments and we were able to grind our way back into an even game, and fortunately we finally beat them in overtime.”
Ilya Sorokin made 36 saves to get the win.
“Day in and day out, practice day and game day, he’s always trying to do his best,” the Islanders’Jean-Gabriel Pageau said. “He’s super-competitive, even in practice. He lets one goal in and he’s not happy. He’s trying to save all of them. I think that’s why he’s so good. He’s fighting for us. He’s playing for the logo on the front and we’re happy to have him here.”
Oskar Lindblom was the lone striker for the Flyers.
“We played a pretty good game,” the Flyers’ Sean Couturier said. “We outshot them, had our chances, but we couldn’t capitalize and they get two bounces their way and they cashed in.”
Oliver Wahlstrom also scored for the Islanders to tie the game at 1-1.
“Goal scorers, their eyes light up,” Trotz said. “They know where the money’s at. The pot of gold is around the crease when there’s a lot of chaos. Those guys seem to be able to get their radar on it and then they use those good hands to score goals.”
Brian Elliott made 17 saves in the loss.
“In my estimation, we should have scored more than one,” Philadelphia head coach Alain Vigneault said. “We had some outnumbered situations there where we didn’t quite execute. We had some real good looks, and at the end of the night their goaltender was the difference tonight.”
