Jean-Gabriel Pageau had two goals for the New York Islanders

Jean-Gabriel Pageau struck for two goals for the Isles.

“It was a big win,” Pageau said. “We had to be ready from the start. We knew they were the top team and they were going to play a hard game, a physical game. They have a lot of details in their game.

“I thought we played a solid game. … We played with confidence and made some hard plays. I thought we were better than them around the net tonight.”

Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves. for the win.

“I liked our response. I mean, that tells you a lot about the group,” New York head coach Barry Trotz said. “The response in those moments … you look at the stretch of the four or five games where something would go a little bit wrong for us and we let it linger. I like the fact that we just get back in the saddle.”

Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron were the Bruins strikers.

“I don’t think we had our legs tonight (Boston defeated the New York Rangers 1-0 on Friday),” Bergeron said. “I don’t think we were making, at times, our best decisions. We played a great team, a team that is very hard on the forecheck. They got a lot of turnovers out of it and created a lot of chances out of that forecheck.”

Mathew Barzal potted the game-winnerJordan Eberle also scored for New York.

Pageau’s second goal was empty-netter to cie the win.

Tuukka Rask made 38 saves, in the loss.

“I think from the 10-minute mark (of the first period), any puck below the goal line was a challenge for us to break out, whether it was miscommunication, just not executing, not getting there on time, their second guy beating our second,” Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We just had a really tough time, and so we got hemmed in our end. It cost us three goals, really, today. The first three goals, we had puck possession, we just didn’t execute the play. That’s where our problems were tonight.”
