Isles drop 10th straight in OT loss to Detroit

In Detroit, the New York Islanders competed on Saturday with special teams getting two power play goals and shorthanded strike, but still lost, 4-3, in overtime to the Red Wings.

The loss was the 10th straight for the Isles.

“I thought we played well tonight, so it is disappointing to not get two points out of this one,” Islanders head coach Barry Trotz said. “We got a boost from our special teams, we created chances and we played well defensively.

“We could have gotten two points, but we got one.”

Moritz Seider picked up the game-winner for the Wings at 3:33 of the extra session.

“I knew that if I missed the one-timer, it was going to be a 2-on-1 break the other way,” Seider said. “I think the whole team has gained a lot of confidence from this winning streak.”

Alex Nedeljkovic made 20 saves in the Detroit win.

Oliver Wahlstrom scored twice on the power play for New York.

“It was great to get the power play going tonight, but we can’t expect to win games without scoring at even strength,” Wahlstrom said.

Detroit improved to 13-9-3.

“I think we made a conscious effort to defend the inside of the ice tonight,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “When you are willing to sacrifice and block shots, you are rewarded with chances at the other end.”

Givani Smith and Filip Hronek  also scored for the Red Wings.

“Our game wasn’t perfect tonight, but we were able to compete and grind our way past mistakes,” Blashill said. “That’s part of winning games in this league. Every team is so close that you have to be working hard to have a chance.”

Cal Clutterbuck gave the Isles a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal in the first period.

“I thought we were great for the first 10 or 12 minutes of the second period — I’m not even sure they had a shot,” Trotz said. “But Detroit did a great job of blocking shots and they eventually turned one into a 2-on-1 the other way.”

San Gagner also scored for Detroit.

Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves in the Isles loss.

“I was really happy with the way we came back from being down 2-1 and again from being down 3-2,” Trotz said. “With everything we’ve been through, especially how long it has been since we’ve gotten a win, it is tough to keep fighting when you get down.”
