Isles damage Flyers playoff chances

PHILADELPHIA – The Flyers needed a win Saturday afternoon and the visiting New York Islanders denied them the opportunity with a 4-2 defeat.

Robin Lehner made 22 saves to get the win for the Isles.

Josh Bailey struck for two goals including the game-winner with under four minutes left in regulation.

“Wasn’t like we didn’t deserve to score goals the last couple games,” Bailey said. “Obviously certain areas we need to be better in. Sometimes it’s a break here and there that can be the difference and open things up for you.”

The loss dropped Philadelphia to 36-31-8 and they are seven points back of a playoff position.

Robert Hagg and Shayne Gostisbehere had the Flyers’ goals.

“Bad feeling right now,” Hagg said. “They played better than us the whole game. We didn’t deserve to win today. Right now, it’s a terrible feeling.”

Brock Nelson and Nick Leddy also scored for the Isles who improved to 43-25-7 and are one point back of the Metro Division lead.

New York was scoreless in five power play chances.

“It’s something we’ve been working a lot on and talking a lot about,” Bailey said. “You get a full two minutes on the 5-on-3, you’ve got to capitalize, especially at that time of game and we didn’t. Had some looks, their goalie made some saves. But we’ve got to find a way to be better in those situations and put one in.”

Carter Hart made 36 saves in the loss.

“When we tied it up there I thought we were in control and it wasn’t the case,” Flyers forward Claude Giroux said.
