Isles come up short in 4-1 loss to Boston

In Elmont, the New York Islanders were looking for a statement win on Wednesday when they hosted the Boston Bruins.

It started out fine, with Zach Parise scoring in the first period to give the Isles a 1-0 lead, but that was all the offense the stingy Bruins defense allowed in a 4-1 win.

Linus Ullmark made 25 saves in the Boston win, it was his 100th career NHL win.

“I couldn’t be more happy,” Ullmark said of his 100th win. “It has been overwhelming playing with these guys who bring it every night. I have [so] much gratitude.”

The Bruins improved to 35-5-4 on their third straight win.

Boston tied the game, 1-1, at 7:48 of the second period on a marker from Charlie McAvoy , his third of the season.

New York dropped to 23-19-4.

“It’s something where we’ve got to find our way through it,” New York coach Lane Lambert said. “Again, we need to collect some wins here. It’s a tough league. Unforgiving league. Nobody’s feeling sorry for us.”

The Isles were 1-2-2 on their five-game homestand.

“I feel like we played better than what the results are,” Lambert said. “Results are results, and [we’re in] a results-based business.”

Derek Forbort also scored his third of the campaign with 11 minutes gone in the middle frame to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.

Boston kept the pressure on the third period, and Brad Marchand scored off the  power play at 5:03 of the third to push the Bruins advantage to 3-1.

“We are resilient,” Marchand said. “We are able to find another level. We have experience. The older guys know how to play.”

Trent Frederic potted his 10th of the season with 4:22 left on the game clock for the 4-1 final.

Semyon Varlamov made 21 saves in the Isles loss.
