Isles close in on Flyers with 3-1 win

PHILADELPHIA – The New York Islanders’ Thomas Greiss made 33 saves as he helped the Isles to a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night.

Since Doug Weight took over head coaching duties for the Islanders New York has gone 7-1-2.

“We haven’t changed a whole lot,” Islanders captain John Tavares said. “Made some adjustments, emphasized a few things and just tried not to give up the middle of the ice in our own zone and try to be in good spots when we create turnovers and to have good puck support and speed coming up the ice. … As players, we’re going out there and executing at a higher standard than we were for a good portion of the year.”

Wayne Simmonds scored the only goal for the Flyers who dropped to 26-22-7 and now have a one-point edge over the Isles for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

“You have to work for your chances in this league,” Simmonds said. “You can’t just hope you have to make them happen.”

Jason Chimera’s second period goal gave the Isles a 2-1 lead with just over two minutes gone in the middle frame.

“We’re not even thinking about playoffs,” Chimera said. “We’re just taking one game at a time. [We] don’t even know the standings, we know it was a huge game to get us back up there. We dug ourselves a pretty big hole in the first part of the year and we’re getting out of it. [A] lot of different people are contributing right now and we just have to keep moving forward.”

John Tavares and Casey Cizikas also scored for New York.

Steve Mason made 30 saves in taking the loss for Philadelphia who have lost three straight.
