In Elmont, Ilya Sorokin made 49 saves, an NHL career-high, in a 3-0 shutout of the Edmonton Oilers by the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.
“When you’re playing, you don’t think about how many shots,” Sorokin said. “I [saw] after the game. It’s too many shots, but it was a good game for me today.”
Jean-Gabriel Pageau hit for a shorthanded and power play goals in the middle frame to stake the Isles to a 2-0 lead.
“I thought we were committed to playing the right way,” Islanders coach Lane Lambert said. “We had a lot of guys playing very well tonight.”
The Isles improved to 13-8-0.
“What this game came down to is we were unable to solve their goaltender,” Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. “Pouring 49 shots on someone, that’s what we set out to do every game. We didn’t find a way to crack him.”
Sebastian Aho pushed the lead to 3-0 at 16:36 of the second period.
“First of all, I thought we showed up tonight,” Pageau said. “We came in and we knew we had a big challenge. We played with urgency for a full 60 (minutes), Sorokin, again, was outstanding.”
Jack Campbell made 28 saves in the Oilers loss.
“You’re never thinking you’re going to get shut out,” Edmonton captain Connor McDavid said.
