Islanders in, Penguins out Isles' win over Canadiens eliminates Pittsburgh from playoff race

In Elmont, the New York Islanders got two goals from Brock Nelson, and defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 4-2, on Wednesday night.The win locked down the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The decision also eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins from the playoff race.

The he Islanders improved to 42-31-9.

Ilya Sorokin made 17 saves in the New York win.

Nelson’s first of the match came in the opening stanza for a 1-0 lead to the Isles.

The Canadiens dropped to 31-44-6.

The Islanders reclaimed the lead with 63 seconds left on the clock in the first on a strike from Hudson Fasching.

Nelson hit for his double midway through the second period for a 3-1 lead to the Isles.

Nick Suzuki scored a shorthanded goal with just over three minutes left in the middle frame to trim the Canadiens deficit to 3-2.

New York’s Anders Lee hit off the power play with four minutes left on the game clock for the 4-2 final.

Sam Montembeault made 31 saves in the Habs loss.
