DES MOINES, IA – Iowa Wild General Manager Brent Flahr announced on Tuesday the American Hockey League (AHL) club has signed the following players to an AHL contract for the 2017-18 season: defensemen Mike Sdao (suh-day-oh) and Ian Brady, goalie Christian Frey (FRY), as well as forwards Jack Walker and Evan Janssen.
Sdao, 28 (7/3/89), played in two games for Iowa in 2016-17, scoring a goal for his only point. He also played in 61 games for the ECHL’s Colorado Eagles, placing third overall on the team with 177 minutes in penalties, while scoring nine goals and totaling 13 points. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder has played in 137 AHL games over his four-year career, scoring ten goals and setting up 13 others for 23 points, to go along with 336 minutes in penalties. The Niwot, CO native was originally drafted in the seventh round (#191 overall) by the Ottawa Senators in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Brady, 23 (5/22/94), turned pro in the spring after a four-year career at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The 6-foot, 200-pound defenseman played in two games for the AHL’s Rochester Americans, picking up his first pro point with an assist. Over the course of his college career, Brady scored 15 goals and added 62 assists for 77 points in 136 games for the Mavericks. The Lombard, IL native spent three years in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, scoring 11 goals and totaling 62 points in 159 outings for the Roughriders.
Frey, 24 (6/12/93), begins his pro career after a four-year stay at Ohio State. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound goaltender played in 23 games for OSU in 2016-17, posting a 9-7-3 mark with a 3.07 GAA and a .910 SV %. In four years with the Buckeyes, Frey went 36-34-11 with a 2.85 GAA and a .913 SV%. The Arlington, TX native played in the USHL for the Des Moines Buccaneers in 2011-12, followed by stints in Dubuque and Tri-City from 2012-14.
Walker, 21 (7/30/96), turns pro after five years with the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League (WHL). Last season, he placed second overall in team scoring after potting 31 goals and setting up 41 others for 72 points in 70 games played. He also added four points (2g-2a) in two playoff games for the Royals. Over the course of his WHL career, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound left wing scored 101 goals and assisted on 147 for 248 points in 318 games played. The Toronto Maple Leafs originally drafted the Edina, MN native in the sixth round (#152 overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Janssen, 24 (3/30/93), wrapped up a four-year career this past spring at the University of Denver where he played in 146 games. The 6-foot, 185-pound forward scored 14 collegiate goals and added 33 assists for 47 points with the Pioneers. Prior to his collegiate career, the Green Bay, WI native played in Dubuque for the USHL’s Fighting Saints in 2012-13.
