Iowa grab 3-0 win over Reign

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Wild (1-2-0-0, 2 points) defeated the Ontario Reign (0-2-0-0, 0 points) 3-0 in front of 4,628 fans on Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Wild goalie Niklas Svedberg (1-2-0) made 27 saves for the shutout and first win of the season. Veteran forward Pat Cannone and rookie defenseman Carson Soucy each tallied a goal and an assist in the win. In his AHL debut, Waterloo, IA native and Reign goalie Cal Petersen (0-1-0) made 25 saves in the loss. Iowa heads to Rockford for a game on Saturday at 6 p.m.

After a scoreless first period, Wild forward Pat Cannone gave Iowa a 1-0 lead at 9:58 of the middle frame. His third goal of the season came off a scramble in front of the Ontario net. Cannone tipped in Landon Ferraro’s shot to beat Petersen on the glove side. Forward Gerald Mayhew added an assist on the only goal of the period.

Rookie defenseman Carson Soucy extended Iowa’s lead to 2-0 at 5:58 of the third period. His first career goal was assisted by defenseman Brennan Menell and Cannone. Soucy blasted the puck from the blueline after an Ontario defender tried clearing the puck from the Reign crease. At 19:00 of the third period, forward Colton Beck scored an empty-net goal. His first goal of the season was set up by Soucy and made it a final score of 3-0 in favor of Iowa.

After a road game in Rockford, the Wild returns home to meet the Manitoba Moose on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Ladies Night is presented by Style Encore.
