FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Iowa Heartlanders overcame a two-goal deficit with three goals in a three-minute span, stunning the Fort Wayne Komets, 5-4, Sunday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The Heartlanders trailed, 4-2, with 6:40 to go before strikes from two goals from Jake Durflinger and a tying strike from Tommy Parrottino jolted Iowa into the lead.
Iowa has matched a season-best winning streak (3), with all wins coming on the road in three different cities this weekend. The Heartlanders have won four straight road games, also a season best. Mitch Benson made 33 saves for his first professional win.
Parrottino and Durflinger each scored twice in the third. Durflinger scored twice in 3:40. His second goal came on a breakaway, labeling it top shelf past his former teammate Corbin Kaczperski (loss, 26 saves, 5 goals allowed). His first strike came on a two-on-one up the right slot, set up by a drop feed from Brendan Robbins.
Before Durflinger gave Iowa the lead, Parrottino made a remarkable individual effort with a deke through two defenders at the Komets line to spring himself to the left slot. He scored top shelf, his team-best 22nd of the second to make it 4-4 Komets with 14:13 of the third. He also tied the game on a two-on-one back-door tip, assisted by Yuki Miura on a feed to the left post.
Jesse Jacques opened the scoring on Iowa’s first offensive chance. Zach White slung it to the high slot for Carson Denomie for a wrist shot. After an initial save, the puck rebounded directly to Jacques for a left-slot back handed shot that went in at the bottom left pocket. Jacques has goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
Iowa allowed two power-play goals to Darien Kielb and Drake Rymsha in the second and fell behind by one entering the third, 2-1.
Iowa visits Wheeling Fri., Apr. 7 at 6:10 p.m. and Indy Sat., Apr. 8 at 6:00 p.m. next week. The team is at home for the last three games of the regular season Apr. 12, Apr. 14 and Apr. 15 vs. Wheeling.
