NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – The Jacksonville Icemen finished off their two-game series against the South Carolina Stingrays with their second win by a score of 3-1 Tuesday night. The victory allowed the Icemen to leapfrog the Stingrays into second place in the ECHL’s South division.
The Icemen found the net early when Kris Newbury set up Jake Randolph in the high slot for a one timer straight to the back of the net at 2:18 of the first period. The tally was Randolph’s fourth of the season. Not long after at 3:53, Cody Fowlie scored off of some beautiful passing from Jacob Cederholm and Christophe Lalancette for his seventh of the season. The goal was a short-handed tally, the Icemen’s 11th of the season.
The Stingrays had come out flat in the first but changed things up at 4:14 of the second period when Matt Pohlkamp deflected a shot by Christian Horn from the point that found the back of the net. For Pohlkamp, it was his eleventh goal of the season.
The close game continued, with both sides exchanging chances into the end of the second. The third period saw South Carolina and Jacksonville each getting solid chances. Tough play between the pipes from South Carolina netminder Angus Redmond, including two sprawling saves, kept the Stingrays within reach.
It was not enough, however, as Cam Maclise sealed the game with an empty netter with 34 seconds left in the third. The score was Maclise’s eighth of the year.
Jacksonville goalie Mikhail Berdin once again was solid, making 20 saves to pick up the win. With the victory, Jacksonville improved its record to 6-1 against South Carolina this season.
The Icemen are back in action on Wednesday, January 16th against the Norfolk Admirals. Game time at The Scope in Norfolk is set for 7 p.m. EST.
