Icemen defeat Stingrays in school day game

JACKSONVILLE, FLA – Thursday morning at the Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Icemen hosted their annual school day game. This season, like last, the opponent for the game was the South Carolina Stingrays, who the Icemen defeated last year 5-2. Like last year, the Icemen came out on top, this time by a 4-1 score.

Jacksonville started Mikhail Berdin, in his second game back with the Icemen after spending time in the AHL,in net. Adam Morrison got the start for South Carolina.

Jacksonville opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period, when Cam Critchlow recorded his first goal of the season from the top of the slot. The goal came at 7:10 of the period and was unassisted.

The second period would also see only one goal but this goal would come from the Stingrays, who tied at game at the 14:21 mark of the period on a goal by Tad Korzan. Assists on the goal were awarded to Sam Fioretti and Joey Leach. The game was tied after two at 1-1.

The third period was a period controlled by the Icemen. Jacksonville took the lead at the 8:27 mark when Justin Woods scored his second goal of the season (his first came Tuesday in the morning school game in Orlando), off assists from Cody Fowlie and Dan DeSalvo. Insurance came at the 16:22 mark when Wacey Rabbit recorded his sixth of the season, off assists from Dajon Mingo and Fowlie. Jacksonville ended the scoring when the Icemen registered an empty net, short-handed goal at 19:04 as Fowlie recorded his fourth. Assists went to Kris Newbury and Mingo and Icemen ended the game with their seventh win of the season in nine tries.

IN OTHER STATS: The attendance for the game was 10,093. The Arena actually had to open parts of the upper bowl to accommodate the school crowd… Jacksonville outshot South Carolina for the game 30-24… South Carolina ended the game with 13 penalty minutes, Jacksonville 15… Although he did not register a goal or assist in the game, Jacob Cederholm tied Cody Fowlie with the best plus/minus in the game with +3.

The three stars of the game all came from the Icemen: Mikhail Berdin (1st), Cody Fowlie (2nd) and Dajon Mingo (3rd).

THE SCHEDULE AHEAD: Jacksonville now heads on the road for a two game weekend series in Estero against the Florida Everblades. Game one is Friday night.

South Carolina heads home to open a four game road stand. First up are the Orlando Solar Bears, who play the Stingrays on Saturday night.
