Grand Rapids, MI – The Rockford IceHogs fell to the Grand Rapids Griffins 6-2 on Sunday afternoon inside Van Andel Arena.
The Hogs struck first 3:08 into regulation when Aidan Thompson wrapped the puck around the Grand Rapids’ net and tucked it home. Kevin Korchinski earned an assist on the goal to extend his point-streak to four games.
The Griffins responded with a tally from Sheldon Dries, who lifted the puck over Rockford’s Mitchell Weeks to tie the game 1-1.
Grand Rapids built its first lead of the game at 4:02 of the 2nd. Dominik Shine grabbed a rebound right outside of the crease and stashed it into the net. While skating 4-on-4, Amadeus Lombardi dangled through the slot and fed John Leonard at the circle for a one-timer that extended the GR lead to 3-1.
At 13:39 of the middle period, Samuel Savoie charged his way down the near wing wall and backhanded a pass to the middle that deflected off of the GR defense and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Weeks kept Rockford in it early in the 3rd, stopping Shine on a penalty shot. Shortly after the save though, Eduards Tralmaks found a rebound and banged it home to restore the two-goal GR lead. On a power play two minutes later, John Leonard snapped home the 5-2 goal from the slot.
Jakub Rychlovsky added a 6th Grand Rapids goal when he was left alone in the slot at 16:38 of the 3rd.
