Ice prevail in wild affair with Brave, 10-9

CANBERRA, Australia – A wild affair between the Canberra Brave and the Melbourne Ice was witnessed on Saturday.

A relatively mild opening frame ended with a 2-1 lead in favor of the Ice on goals from Lasse Lassen and Matt Armstrong bookending a goal from Jan Safar from the Brave.

The second period was simply the appetizer to the rest of the feast that was this game.3V5A0049

The Ice posted five goals in the middle frame to the Brave’s two to take a 7-3 lead.

Chris Yule extended the Ice lead to 3-1 before the Brave responded with a goal.  The Ice then reeled off four unanswered goals before the Brave came back with a goal from Matheu Guertin.

Seventeen penalties were called in the second period as both teams found cause to drop the mitts.

The third period was the icing on the cake for this goal-fest as the Brave rallied with three power play goals in less than four minutes from the opening puck drop of the period.  Then Canberra added two more goals to take an improbable 8-7 lead.

But the Ice replied with a rally of their own including Armstrong completing a hat trick to take a 10-8 lead.

The Brave scored with 12 seconds left to make the final 10-9.

The Ice remain atop the AIHL ladder with 57 points as the season near its end.

The Brave sit in the fourth position in the ladder with 46 points, 14 clear of the Melbourne Mustangs.
