Hutton, Sabres hand LA second straight shutout

In Los Angeles, Carter Hutton made 47 saves in a 3-0 shutout for Buffalo over the Kings. The effort set a franchise record for saves in a shutout.

“He stole us that game, so we’ll take two points, for sure, pretty much thanks to [Hutton],” Casey Mittelstadt said.

Mittelstadt had two goals for the Sabres, his first two of the season.

The loss was the second straight for the Kings, both by shutout.

“I think the offense will come and come back. … But that’s not my concern,” Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan said. “My concern is our approach to the game early tonight. The same line, two shifts in a row, made the same mistake. Like, you think you’d learn the first time, so that’s a concern of ours.”

The Sabres needed Hutton’s heroics as they relaxed after the 3-0 lead was crafted.  LA had 36 shots on goal over the final 40 minutes of the game.

“We were trying to get the 4-0 (goal) at times in the second period, and (the team is) still learning how to manage games like this,” Sabres head coach Ralph Krueger said. “We are a group that has so much to learn, and tomorrow’s going to be another day of learning. I think today what happened was guys were excited by the way the game started for us.”

Conor Sheary also scored for the Sabres who improved to 6-1-1.

Jack Campbell made 21 saves in the loss.

“It was first 10 minutes of the game that put us behind, and we couldn’t get back. Credit to them, they’re a good team,
Anze Kopitar said after the loss. “ut it wasn’t so much what they were doing, it was we gave up four or five odd-man rushes, and they cashed in, so you just can’t expect to give up odd-man rushes and not get scored on.”
