Hurricanes wipe away early deficit with six unanswered goals to down Columbus

In Columbus, the visiting Carolina Hurricanes fell behind by a 1-3 count in their game with the Blue Jackets on Monday night.

Their response?  The Canes reeled off six unanswered goals in a 7-3 thrashing of Columbus.

Jordan Staal scored a pair of goals in the win.

“This year, he’s (Staal) a special guy,” Andrei Svechnikov said. “It’s so fun to play with him. It’s kind of easy to play with him.”

James Reimer made 37 saves to get the win.

“When you put guys that do it right with some real talented players, you have a chance to see these kinds of results,” Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour said.

Boone Jenner and Cam Atkinson staked the Jackets to a 2-0 lead.

“There were a couple of simple coverages where we just don’t get it done,” Columbus head coach John Tortorella said. “We need to work on things. [There are] guys that need to know how to play hard, need to know how to handle momentum swings. And there are a number of guys, we just have to calm ourselves down with our coverages in our [own] zone.”

Kevin Stenlund struck for Columbus to give them a 3-1 lead before the house fell in on Columbus.

Teuvo Teravainen scored in his return after three games. off for COVID-19 protocols.

“I just haven’t felt normal,” Teravainen said. “I get tired [in] the legs. The timing too; I haven’t played in a long time. But it’s starting to feel a little better now, so that’s good.”

Brock McGinn also scored twice, and Sebastian Aho added single marker for the Canes.

“I’m just trying to do a job of getting open,” McGinn said. “They just make some special plays and it ends up on my stick, and right now it’s working.”

Nino Niederreiter  and  also scored for Carolina.

“I just haven’t felt normal,” Teravainen said. “I get tired [in] the legs. The timing too; I haven’t played in a long time. But it’s starting to feel a little better now, so that’s good.”

Joonas Korpisalo got the start for Columbus and yielded five of the Canes goals, making 20 saves; he was given the hook in the middle frame.

“When they start surging a bit, we have to do a better job of checking, moving our feet and getting back to our game,” Jenner said. “We can’t let them score quick ones like that.”

Elvis Merzlikins made seven saves in a mop up role.
