Caro9lina improved to 37-11-4.

“For the amount of high offensive players in the game, there weren’t a ton of Grade-A opportunities,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “It was a bunch of almosts. The way those guys play, they’re a handful for sure. But I thought we had a good effort again, and I like the result.”

Teuvo Teravainen hit for a goal and two points in the Hurricanes win.

“Everybody is trying to tell me to shoot the puck more,” Teravainen said. “I always try to look for the play. If it’s there, I’ll pass. If it’s not, I’ll try to shoot sometimes.”

Derek Ryan scored the Oilers only goal in the loss.

“We can be better for sure,” Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. “That said, I thought our compete was off the charts. I thought they pushed us, we pushed them. It was a heck of a hockey game.”

Edmonton fell to 29-21-3.

Sebastian Aho also scored for Carolina.

“The whole key for us is to understand what is available, what is the best play,” Brind’Amour said. “Sometimes you overpass it, and you talk about that a lot. But those plays were there. They were open. The power-play goal was a nice one.”

Mike Smith made 27 saves in the Edmonton loss.

The Oilers were scoressless in four power play chances.

“I think they’ve got a good penalty kill, but we’re a confident power play,” the Oilers’ Zach Hyman said. “It was just one of those nights we couldn’t get it set up and get it going, but I thought our 5-on-5 game was really strong.”
