In Las Vegas, the Carolina Hurricanes scored twice in the third period to break a 2-2 tie with the Golden Knights en route to a 4-2 win on Tuesday night.
“Great game for us. It’s probably how it should look considering they’re missing a lot of players,” Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “I thought we just stuck to our game the whole way.”
Tony DeAngelo and Sebastien Aho scored in the first period to stake the Canes to a 2-0 lead.
Antti Raanta made 21 saves in the Canes win.
“Obviously it was only for a week that I was out, but all the practice and all that kind of stuff I’ve been working on, I just started to feel good,” Raanta said. “Even though they scored a couple in the second, I felt like I was dialed in and ready to play.”
Brett Howden and Shea Theodore were the Vegas strikers in the middle frame to get the game even heading to the third period.
“I don’t think anybody’s going to feel sorry for the Vegas Golden Knights in this league,” Vegas’ Mark Stone said. “The success we’ve had in four years, nobody’s feeling sorry for us, so we’ve got to find ways to generate points, generate wins.”
The Knights dropped to 9-7-0 after having a three-game winning streak ended.
Seth Jarvis and Vincent Trocheck scored in the third period.
“Especially in the first and third, I think we really played our game,” Jarvis said. “I think in the second we stuck to our game but got away from it a little bit. I think we could’ve easily had over 50 shots. That’s a testament for how we want to play; just put some pucks on the net, especially on face-offs, create a little chaos, and good things happen when you go to the net.”
Carolina improved to 12-2-0.
“If you can keep the home team off the scoreboard in the first it’s always good,” Raanta said. “When they get a couple goals, the building gets loud and the home team gets the edge. It’s always fun to come here, the show and everything.”
Robin Lehner made 38 saves in the Vegas loss.
“Robin gave us a chance to be in that game. I thought he was our best player again tonight,” Vegas head coach Peter DeBoer said. “They’re a team that slings a lot of pucks to the net from the point, from bad angles, and I think in my time here we’ve taken a lot of pride in denying those pucks to the net with shot blocks or good sticks and we weren’t good in that area tonight.”
