Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays boosted their hopes of securing an Elite League play-off place with a terrific 3-1 victory over Fife Flyers in Kirkcaldy.
Stingrays, who had Zach Hervato joining captain Matty Davies on the sidelines, went ahead at 25.33 with a short-handed marker from Carl Lauzon.
Scott Fleming tied it up at 36.39 but Jordan Mayer nudged Stingrays back in front at 47.12 before Cory Tanaka’s empty-net goal sealed it with 23 seconds remaining.
Player-coach Omar Pacha said: “It was a massive win and a great team performance. The boys bought in and stepped up – it was a great road game.
“It was one of our best defensive games of the year, the boys were committed and they were blocking shots. We got a little tired in the third and Browny [goaltender David Brown] made some big saves.
“Tom Ralph had a really good game for us, Sam Towner was unbelievable and Jamie Chilcott had one of his best games. We showed a lot of trust in them and they did a great job.
“We knew if we won this game we would put ourselves in a really good position. We wanted six points from these three games and we are on pace.”
Stingrays head to Dundee Stars tomorrow night, with the Scottish side suffering a 12-0 loss to Cardiff Devils in south Wales.
Pacha, who will make his 100th appearance for Stingrays, added: “They will want to respond and I am sure they will come out strong. But we can’t control how they play, it is about us.
“We know we will create chances with our speed and tenacity but we need to be sound defensively again. It is one of our games in hand and we can move above Fife and one point from Coventry if we can pick up another win.”
