Horvat has 3 points, Islanders hand Sharks 9th straight loss

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Bo Horvat had a goal and two assists for the New York Islanders, who handed the San Jose Sharks their ninth straight loss with a 7-2 win at SAP Center on Thursday.

Brock Nelson had three assists, and Anders Lee had a goal and an assist for the Islanders (28-20-14), who have won five straight. Ilya Sorokin made 23 saves.

Thomas Bordeleau and Mike Hoffman scored, and Magnus Chrona made 26 saves in his second start of the season for the Sharks (15-40-4), whose last win was a 6-3 victory against the Calgary Flames on Feb. 15.

Noah Dobson put New York ahead 1-0 just 19 seconds into the first period when his wrist shot deflected off Sharks defenseman Kyle Burroughs’ skate past Chrona.

Alexander Romanov made it 2-0 at 18:31 with a slap shot from the left point through traffic.

Bordeleau cut it to 2-1 at 2:45 of the second period when he redirected a shot by William Eklund on the power play. The forward was recalled on Wednesday from the American Hockey League for the first time since October.

Horvat made it 3-1 at 11:24 when he picked up the puck at the goal line, skated to the slot and beat Chrona with a wrist shot.

Hoffman made it 3-2 at 11:49, putting in a centering pass from Givani Smith in front on the rush.

Kyle MacLean pushed it to 4-2 at 12:04 with a wrist shot from a tight angle below the left circle.

Mathew Barzal made it 5-2 at 14:21. He gloved down a clearing attempt at the blue line, did a give-and-go with Nelson and beat Chrona with a snap shot from the right circle.

Sebastian Aho increased the lead to 6-2 at 16:25 with a snap shot from the left circle off a cross-ice pass from Horvat.

Lee scored 14 seconds into a four-minute power play when his pass from behind the net redirected off Sharks defenseman Jan Rutta’s skate for the 7-2 final at 8:08 of the third.
