In Las Vegas, Dallas’ Roope Hintz scored with 38 seconds left on the third period clock to get the Stars even with the Golden Knights, 2-2, and force extra time.
Hintz tied it 2-2 when he shot through a screen from the top of the right circle.
“I saw the goalie didn’t see anything there. It was a good screen,” Hintz said. “I just picked a corner and it went in.”
The extra session solved nothing and Hintz was credited with the deciding goal on penalties for a 3-2 for the Stars/
The victory ended a five-game skid for Dallas.
“Need a big play at a big time. I was pretty lucky, but you got to sell out in those moments,” Dallas’ Jason Robertson said. “Got a lucky bounce. Then we went the other way. What’s more impressive is how composed we were in the final moments.”
Jake Oettinger made 41 saves in the Stars win.
“Just a good hockey game. [Oettinger] kept us in it early in the game in the first period,” Stars coach Peter DeBoer said. “They came out quick. We were a little slow out of the gate. It was a hard-fought good hockey game. I’m glad we got out on the right side. We’ve been on the wrong side too many times. We worked hard tonight. We deserved it.”
Dallas improved to 31-17-12.
After a scoreless first period, Vegas took a 1-0 lead in the middle frame off a marker from Michael Amadio .
“[Amadio’s] done a good job. He’ s a guy over the years who’s been more a playmaker than a greasy guy,” Cassidy said. “It’s what’s in front of him. You want to play? You want to play more? That’s the ask right now.”
Robertson tied the game, 1-1, two minutes later.
Vegas dropped to 35-18-6.
“It’s three good ones. Should be three wins for [Brossoit]. Unfortunately, he only got the one,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “All the games have gone into extra time. He’s done his job very well for us. I’m happy for him. He’s a hard-working guy who’s worked to get back to this point now this year. It’s too bad we couldn’t put him in the win column every night. Big picture he’s given us solid goaltending.”
Jack Eichel scored in the 16th minute of the third period to restore the Vegas lad at 2-1.
Laurent Brossoit made 41 saves in the Knights loss.
“Some of the best saves mean you’re out of position,” Brossoit said. “That I was. I kind of threw my glove at it. Luckily, he shot at the one spot that I could have gotten it.”
