After quietly skating through the first weeks of free agency, the Anaheim Ducks made a splash Monday by signing Adam Henrique to a five-year extension on his contract.
Henrique was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on 1 July 2019.
The Ducks acquired Henrique in November of 2017 in a trade with the New Jersey Devils.
“They (Ducks) were always one of my favorite teams growing up, which obviously makes this a little more special,” he said.
In 57 games with the Ducks, Henrique picked up 20 goals and 36 points and was a significant presence on the ice for Anaheim.
“I felt like I had been there for years with some of those guys,” Henrique said in a statement released by the Ducks. “It’s one of the reasons I wanted to stay. I’m excited it’s done, I’m excited for what’s ahead and I’m excited for hopefully bringing a Cup back there.”
Earlier this month Anaheim signed former Devils forward Brian Gibbons with whom Henrique had developed a level of chemistry before the trade.
Gibbons’ production and ice suffered after the trade.
“Always been a dream to play for the @anaheimducks and I’m excited to be staying for years to come,” Henrique said on his Twitter feed.
The Ducks did not officially release terms of the contract but it has been reportedly set at just under $30 million for the five years.
